ASUS has announced their refreshed ROG laptop lineup, with the most interesting item being their new G501. It's a thin and light gaming laptop that takes many design cues from the Macbook Pro and the Razer line of laptops. Most importantly, it's another new notebook (see previously announced Dell M3800) that includes Thunderbolt for our eGPU use.

I'm waiting for this one...in the meantime I'm going to be using my rMBP '12.

It also has USB-C I believe.

These should be interesting. I don't think it's been mentioned here yet that USB-C is more than just USB 3.1..it also has an adapter to communicate with PCI-E

Lol i was looking at a joke in the pcworld article in my google search and didn't read the full thing. It doesn't have usb-c.

TB2 should be the case. I doubt they'd use old tech

They are still quoting TB1 10Gbps interface speed at Latest News - ASUS . Is this a typo or are they still using older Thunderbolt chips? Hope it's a typo.

An insanely-fast 512GB PCI Express® x4 (PCIe® x4) solid-state disk (SSDs) with data-transfer speeds of up to 1400MB/s — more than twice as fast as SATA 6.0 Gb/s SSDs or 16X faster than SATA 6.0 Gb/s hard disk drives – is standard on the ROG G501. Intel Thunderbolt™ technology provides a single-cable for data and graphics interface with speeds of up to 10Gbit/s — twice the bandwidth of USB 3.0 – for lightning-fast connectivity to external devices and compatible displays.

Interestingly, it all depends where you look! On the Asus Canada website, it just quotes as 10Gbit/s, but if you look here it shows TB2: ASUS G Series ROG Gaming Laptops - An Ultimate Gaming Rig Wherever You Go

As well, on Newegg.com (sadly not even on newegg.ca), the one showing also quotes TB2! ASUS G501 ROG G501JW-DS71 4K Thin and Light Gaming Laptop - Newegg.com

It may end up all depending on region as well, because from the looks of it, anything in EU territory won't have TB at all :(

I'm quite keen on this thing actually.. right now I've got 3 systems I switch between.. custom built desktop, 2012 15" Macbook Pro (non-retina), and an MS Surface Pro (gen 1) and would really rather just have one solid laptop for photo/video editing and mild gaming, then with an eGPU for higher quality gaming. I have a severe problem with files disorganized on 3 diffferent computers, and I don't even want to get into how split up my Lightroom libraries are and probable duplicates ;)

should also note that there seems to be a fair bit of instances with people experiencing screen flicker, which from my understanding has to do with ASUS using PWM to control screen brightness..

Still debating this laptop...
